What age should a child start Bharatanatyam?

Around five is the usual age. But the better question is whether your child can listen and follow for an hour. Here is how to tell, and why starting later is fine too.

The short answer

Most children start Bharatanatyam between five and seven. Before that, an hour-long class with steady posture work is hard for most children to follow.

Signs your child is ready

They can follow a simple instruction and copy a movement. They can stay with one activity for close to an hour. They are curious about dance, music or the stories behind it.

If two of these are true, your child is probably ready. Tell us about them and we will advise.

Is ten, twelve or fifteen too late?

No. Children who start older often move faster in the first year, because they understand corrections and can practise alone. Students who start in their teens can still work towards an arangetram.

What the first months look like

The first classes are about posture, the araimandi stance and the first groups of adavus, the basic steps. Hand gestures and simple rhythm come with them. It is slow on purpose: a clean foundation is what everything later is built on.

Questions

Can a four-year-old learn Bharatanatyam?+

Some can, but most children are ready around five, when they can follow an hour-long class. If your child is four, tell us about them and we will advise honestly.

Are there Bharatanatyam classes for a 3-year-old?+

Three is usually too young for an hour-long classical class. Most children are ready around five. Until then, music, rhythm games and watching dance at home are a good start.

Is it too late to start Bharatanatyam at 12?+

No. Starting at 12 is common, and older beginners often progress quickly in the first year.
