Arangetram
Bharatanatyam arangetram: a plain guide for parents
An arangetram is a dancer's first full solo performance on stage, the moment a student shows everything they have learned. Forty-five of Arunima Raj's students have completed theirs. Here is what it involves, in plain words.
What an arangetram is
The word comes from Tamil: arangu means stage, and etram means to climb. It marks the point where a teacher feels the student can carry a full programme alone, with live music, in front of an audience.
It is a big day for the family, but it is not a graduation. Most dancers keep learning for years after it.
What is danced
A Bharatanatyam arangetram follows the traditional order of a full recital, called the margam. It usually opens with an invocation such as the pushpanjali or alarippu, then moves through pure-dance pieces like the jatiswaram, into the shabdam and the long varnam at the centre of the programme.
The second half has expressive pieces such as padams, where the story is told through abhinaya, and closes with a fast, joyful tillana and a mangalam. The full programme often runs two hours or more.
How long it takes
There is no fixed timetable. It usually comes after several years of steady practice, once the adavus are clean, the stamina is there and the student can hold expression through a long piece.
At Narthaki nobody is rushed towards the stage. Arunima tells the family when a student is ready.
Arangetram at Narthaki
Arunima Raj holds an MA in Bharatanatyam from Kannur University, where she was second rank holder, and trained under Kalamandalam Latha and Kalamandalam Leelamani. She founded Narthaki in 2020, and forty-five of her students have completed their arangetram.
