Online Mohiniyattam classes, taught from Kerala
Mohiniyattam is Kerala's own classical dance: slow, circular, danced with a gentle sway through the whole body. Learning it online with a teacher from Kerala means learning it the way it is meant to be danced, wherever you are.
What makes Mohiniyattam different
Where Bharatanatyam is sharp and geometric, Mohiniyattam is soft and flowing. The movement runs in curves and gentle swings of the torso, and the feet stay quiet and grounded. Control matters far more than speed.
Abhinaya, expression, is at the heart of the form. Much of Mohiniyattam is about telling a story with the face and hands over slow, sustained movement, so a good deal of the training is in stillness and feeling, not only in steps.
Learning it online, live
Classes run one hour, live over video, four times a month, with the teacher correcting you as you dance. Because Mohiniyattam depends so much on line and control, live correction matters even more than in faster forms, which is exactly what a recorded video cannot give you.
Batches stay small. A recording of each class is shared on request so you can practise the slow sequences carefully during the week.
For students in Kerala and abroad
Many of the families who learn Mohiniyattam online with us are Malayali families abroad who want their children connected to a form that belongs to Kerala. Classes run in Malayalam or English, and timings are set around your time zone.
Complete beginners and adults are welcome. You start from posture and basic movement, and build slowly, which suits the unhurried character of the form.
Questions
Can Mohiniyattam be learned online?+
Yes. Classes are live over video, so the teacher watches your line and control and corrects you in the moment. For a slow, expressive form like Mohiniyattam, that live eye is exactly what matters most, and it is why the classes are not pre-recorded.
Is Mohiniyattam only for women?+
Mohiniyattam is traditionally danced by women and the great majority of students are girls and women, but the school welcomes anyone who wishes to learn the form seriously.
How is Mohiniyattam different from Bharatanatyam for a beginner?+
Bharatanatyam is faster, sharper and more rhythmic; Mohiniyattam is slower, softer and more about expression and control. Many beginners find Mohiniyattam gentler on the body and Bharatanatyam more energetic. If you are unsure, tell us and we will help you choose.
