Online Kuchipudi classes, taught live
Kuchipudi, from Andhra Pradesh, is the most theatrical of the classical forms. It blends quick footwork, rounded movement and storytelling that is spoken or sung as well as danced. You learn it live, from the basics, with a teacher who corrects you as you go.
The character of Kuchipudi
Kuchipudi moves between pure dance and drama. Alongside the footwork and rhythm there is a strong storytelling tradition, where the dancer takes on characters and speaks or is sung for. It is expressive, quick and lively.
It is perhaps best known for a signature piece danced balanced on the rim of a brass plate, the tarangam, a later achievement that shows the balance and control the form builds over time.
How you learn it online
Classes run one hour, live over video, four times a month, with real-time correction. You begin with posture, basic steps and rhythm, and build towards fuller compositions as your footwork and expression steady.
Batches are small, and a recording of each class is shared on request for practice through the week. Timings are arranged around your time zone, and classes run in English or Malayalam.
Who can start
Beginners of any age are welcome. Children usually begin around five, and adult beginners are common online. As with every form at Narthaki, the pace follows the student, and the grammar is taught traditionally, without shortcuts.
Questions
Is Kuchipudi harder than Bharatanatyam?+
Neither is harder overall; they are different. Kuchipudi tends to be quicker and more theatrical, with a strong acting and storytelling element, while Bharatanatyam is more geometric and rhythmic. A beginner is guided gently in either.
Do I need to sing or act to learn Kuchipudi?+
No prior skill is needed. The storytelling and expressive side of Kuchipudi is taught as part of the training, step by step, alongside the dance itself.
