Mohiniyattam vs Bharatanatyam

Mohiniyattam vs Bharatanatyam: what is the difference?

Bharatanatyam is sharp, rhythmic and geometric. Mohiniyattam is slow, soft and swaying. Both are classical forms with their own grammar, and Narthaki teaches both. Here is how they differ, and how to choose.

Where they come from

Bharatanatyam comes from Tamil Nadu and is the most widely taught classical dance in India and abroad. Mohiniyattam is Kerala's own classical dance. Its name is often explained as the dance of Mohini, the enchantress.

Side by side

The table below is the quickest way to see the difference. The short version: Bharatanatyam is built on straight lines and crisp footwork; Mohiniyattam on curves, a gentle sway of the torso, and quiet feet.

Which one should a beginner choose?

If your child loves rhythm and energy, Bharatanatyam is the natural start, and it builds a strong base for any other form later. If they are drawn to slow, graceful movement and storytelling, or the family wants a form from Kerala, Mohiniyattam is a lovely first choice.

Many adults find Mohiniyattam gentler on the knees and back at the start. Many students learn both over time. If you are unsure, tell us about the student and Arunima will suggest one.
