How to set up for an online dance class at home
You do not need a studio. You need a small clear space, a camera that shows the feet, and a steady connection. Here is a simple checklist.
Space
About two metres by two metres of clear floor. Move chairs and anything breakable out of the way.
A floor that is not slippery. A plain floor or a thin rug that does not slide is fine. Avoid thick carpet, which makes footwork hard to hear and see.
Camera
Use a laptop or a phone on a stand, placed low and far enough back that the teacher sees the dancer from head to feet.
Light from the front, not behind. A window behind the dancer turns them into a dark shape.
Use a laptop or tablet if you can, so the teacher's movements are big enough to follow.
Clothes and things to keep ready
Comfortable, fitted clothes that let the teacher see the knees and arms, such as a churidar or a practice saree for older students. Hair tied back.
Ghungroos, the ankle bells, come later, once the footwork is ready. Keep a bottle of water nearby.
Internet
A steady connection matters more than a fast one. Sit close to the Wi-Fi router and close other apps and downloads during class.
Questions
Can my child do an online dance class on a phone?+
Yes, but a laptop or tablet is better, because the teacher's movements are bigger on screen. Whatever you use, place it so the teacher can see the feet.
How much space is needed for an online dance class?+
About two metres of clear floor in each direction is enough for the first years of training.
